Chaos Androids - There is no future

"01100101 01111000 01110100 01100101 01110010 01101101 01101001 01101110 01100001 01110100 01100101 "

I'm on a roll. I've set myself a task : clear all those half painted models waiting miserably in the table. Kaleb Daark the other day was the first to take advantage of that new mindset but now it was those chaos androids' turn. Funny thing is that they were started (and forgotten) at about the same time!

I'll be perfectly honest with you here, I really aimed at the most rapid way to get them out of the "to do" list so I took every shortcut I could painting wise.

- Black prime
- Zenithal grey spray
- light drybrush of some areas that were not highlighted
- Big wash (1/4 black paint, 1/4 matt medium, 1/2 water) on everyone
- few sharp highlights here and there
- weathering with blister foam and Doombull brown
- weathering with boltgun metal here and there
- details including eyes, red parts of teh gun and metallics (boltgun metal and couple of washes)
- Typhus corrosion here and there
- blacklining here and there where needed to tidy things up
- DONE

Those precious models come from the Space Crusade box and for some reason I just had to have some in my Chaos Renegades force because a) they're robots and b) they're chaotic. The conversions are not intentional, they are just repairs for the models whose bayonet broke but in a sense it's not a bad thing they did break because it brings a bit of variety in the unit.

To give some variety I decided to make a leader or champion with Necron bits. It seems quite natural since the necrons are after all the natural heirs of the chaos androids. Given his equipment and thanks to Theottovonbismark, I've decided to call him/it : 4sh

"01100010 01101001 01110100 01100101 00100000 01101101 01111001 00100000 01110011 01101000 01101001 01101110 01111001 00100000 01101101 01100101 01110100 01100001 01101100 00100000 01100001 01110011 01110011"
While those are meant to be chaotic, you can notice I didn't paint any chaotic symbol on them. There are two reasons to this : The first one is that it annoyed me to add decals or paint freehands, the second one is that this way though they're tied to my chaos renegades by being all black, they could just as easily represent regular androids for games where I find there is use of cybertronic muscle...

The very good thing about those is that being robots, you can perfectly accept monoposes which will even make them stand from all the different models you'll find in the army.

Gaming wise, I have absolutely no idea about how to play them as there never was any set of rules for them in Rogue trader or 40k apart from the late Necrons. I'll probably either play them as vanilla chaos renegades or maybe I'll take the trouble to stat them properly and calculate the adequate Point Value with the Rogue trader rules. or maybe I'll  just pick generic necron rules from the late editions. don't know yet but knowing myself, this won't be a problem before long.

So that's 9 more models added to the "painted" list, not my best but painted so I'm happy. I wouldn't have had the nerves to give my best on such sculpts anyway.

But the real question is : WHO'S NEXT ?
and the answer is the same as usual : I DON'T KNOW...

Until I get the answer, take care my friends.

PS : Enjoy this totally unofficial and silly video which illustrates the best Megadeth tune I could find :

Oh and just because :

  1. You're on a roll with these partially completed projects. These guys look great - perfect for cheap throwaway antagonists in a range of settings. Need some guardians for an ancient stash of tech? You have a squad ready made!

    1. That's exactly the idea ! And it boosts my mojo to have some things finished at last !
      Everyone wins ;)

    1. Yes, I remembered that as well since it was one of my first trades on the forum. It was a sign for me that leaving them aside any longer would have become ridiculous !

Space Crusade. That was a great game.

    1. I fully intend to, Sir !
I have to admit I have never played the game though for some reason I ended up with plenty of its miniatures back in the day.
Back to the unfinished business now (I've seen there was also that unfinished 8th symphony, maybe I'll take care of that too...)

  4. You should give Space Crusade a try, the game was great. This dark tone on the androids work particularly well !

    2. Haha, do not resist, it's your destiny... :D

They look great! I'm afraid I desecrated most of mine along the years to provide cybernetic pieces to other characters, but I should still keep some of them!

Play some Space Crusade! Your public demand it!

    3. Oh I do want to try it but I must find someone who has a full set ready just to be sure I don't want to paint anympore project ^^.

      Cheers Suber !

  5. i especially like the black patina effect you created with your armour wash, very effective.
If you decide to build their stay lines from scratch it is not the labour of love that it may seem to be and the numbers don't usually add up.
I scratchbuilt an ogryn with no equipment for use on a feral world and he turned out being more expensive than the ogryn found in the compilations!
Good luck with whichever method you choose, I hope to sees battle report with them included at some point. We all know how vital they were to Horus in his heresy.....

    1. I have this Excel sheet built to calculate point costs according to V2 and RT but if it proves silly, I'll just use whatever convenient stat I can find. I don't recall using any point value for 2 years now anyway and with all the games we've played at boyl so far it's never proved to be such a problem really !
I unfortunately don't read much (if at all) books about 40k so I'm afraid I have no idea if they truly were of any use in the story ^^' I just stopped at chaos + robots = cool !

      Thanks a lot ;)

  6. Im fond of those old Chaos Android models and you are right, they dont really require a lot of in depth work to look good.

Whats the painting total for the year at now? Its a healthy number I suspect.

    1. I've just updated the number in the right column and we're now at 43... I guess real life has taken its toll on the count but I guess it's a matter of fun had in priority anyway.
Like you said those are definiteky the kind f forgiving modesl you can paint easy and quick without much remorse.

      Thanks !

  7. Very nice - great to see those old classics painted and ready to rumble! regarding rules, why don't you just go with the RT robot ones? If you're feeling crazy, you could even use the WD flowchart!

    1. After all this seems like teh best of ideas really, why make simple when you can make difficult ?
i'l lhave a look at the small robots rule sbut I'm pretty sure they'll be just perfet (and how come did I miss those when I actually used them for my big hoverbot ?)

Thanks a lot for your tip and comments !

  8. If your interested in an alternative use for them in an RT setting, you could look in the Compendium, Page 101 under "Optional Systems". There's a listing for "Organic Camouflage", which was basically ripped straight from the Terminator movie, but it's a cool concept that would be fun to play in a game.

    Cheers JB :)

  9. I never tire of seeing these get painted up, and it's honestly very exciting to see them converted and with a leader.
The sight of Chaos Androids and the Space Crusade Dreadnought still inspires "fear" in me :)

    1. Yep, I can totally get why, the concept is so cool? I wish I hadn't desacrated my chaos dreadnought, could have enjoyed painting it properly but hey !

  10. Wow, nobody commented that there were rules in Epic 40k that could be adapted? iirc they came in squads of 5 or more and were generally hateful with a tendency to misinterpret orders on purpose (may have been a table for this?). You may have figured this out with several years having passed lol
